Buying a Mac: don’t forget the Refurb store

By Antoine Ribordy

If you are planning to buy a new Mac or even your first Mac, don’t forget to check the Refurb store on the Apple Store, eBay or smalldog.com. Buying a computer from the Refurb store is like buying a machine that is between a new one and a second-hand model.

“Refurbished Mac” or “Clearance” section on the Apple Store

Refurbished computers are usually computers that have gone under repair and are almost like new. However they have still been used, so you might have a few minor scratches on them here and there. Also, you need to be prepared that in some cases you could encounter problems with them, even though it should be very rare. The warranty on these machines is typically 30 to 60 days. Buying a refurbished computer from the Apple Store usually means a better quality one as it has been refurbished directly by Apple technicians. Third- party refurbished models are more prone to problems.
